Senators Marshall, Moran, and Representative Davids Urge USPS Postmaster General to Build New Post Office in Olathe

Washington – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) joined Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) and U.S. Representative Sharice Davids (D-Kansas-03) in urging the United States Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to relocate the City of Olathe’s downtown postal facility and construct a new, efficient, and modern post office.

Olathe is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, and the city is working in partnership with USPS to relocate and modernize the current postal facility.

In the letter, Senator Marshall, Senator Moran, and Representative Davids wrote:

“We write regarding the proposed partnership between the USPS and Olathe, Kansas concerning the relocation of the downtown postal facility and construction of a new, efficient, and modern facility in its place.

“…We wish to again express our strongest support for the project and remind you that each of us remains committed to following the process closely.

“As we have stated before, we believe this type of project can be a model for innovating partnerships benefiting both the USPS and local communities. We believe it will be achievable in quick order, and it will send a strong message to those legislatively engaged in USPS related issues.”

BACKGROUND

  • Olathe is one of the fastest growing cities in Kansas, and the city has been hard at work to revitalize downtown Olathe.
  • The city initiated the move to mitigate the impact of revitalization efforts on post office operations.
  • The Kansas City area has been significantly affected by mail delays, with the region having the sixth-worst on-time delivery rate in the nation in 2024.
  • Senator Marshall has worked extensively to restore reliable mail service for Kansans:
    • In December 2024, Senator Marshall helped deliver a new post office for Winchester, Kansas.
    • In June 2024, Senator Marshall secured an audit from USPS on mail services in the Kansas City area to evaluate the efficiency of mail delivery and post office operations.
    • In March 2024, Senator Marshall led a letter with Kansas and Missouri delegation members requesting answers and transparency for the continued decline in performance indicators, inconsistent mail delivery across the two-state region, and insufficient staffing at USPS facilities.
    • In February 2024, Senator Marshall sent a separate letter asking for explanations for frequent mail delivery delays to residents in Johnson County.
