Senator Marshall Secures Major Win for City of El Dorado

(Kansas City, KS, July 29, 2022) – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. voted in favor of the Water Resources Development Act of 2022. The legislation authorizes key projects and studies to tackle water resources challenges across the country. The bill also makes important revisions to the Civil Works policies and programs of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to increase the agency’s responsiveness to national and local priorities. At the request of Senator Marshall, the bill included changes to the City of El Dorado water storage agreement with USACE that is expected to save the city millions of dollars in interest payments.

“My father was the Chief of Police in El Dorado for many years and that city certainly holds a special place in my heart,” said Senator Marshall. “I’m happy we could help them navigate a contractual issue with USACE – that if left unchanged, it would continue to have dramatic financial implications for the community. The savings realized through the modified agreement will help the city leverage its unique water storage situation for future growth and development.”

City Commissioner Kendra Wilkinson of El Dorado said, “The City of El Dorado, on behalf of its citizens, appreciates the recent vote on the Water Resources Development Act by the U.S. Senate. The legislation provides much needed relief to the citizens of our community and sets forth actions that allow El Dorado Lake to remain a financially viable resource for El Dorado and Butler County, Kansas. The City appreciates Senator Marshall’s support and assistance in addressing El Dorado’s concerns and getting it into the Water Resources Development Act for congressional action.”
