Senator Marshall on Newsmax: This Is the Schumer Shutdown

Washington –U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) joined The Record with Greta Van Susteren on Newsmax yesterday to discuss the ongoing government funding battle as Senate Democrats threaten to shut down the government.

Senator Marshall emphasized the need to pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) to continue funding the government through September 30, 2025, so congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump’s Administration can continue to implement the America First Agenda the American people overwhelmingly voted for last November.

Highlights from Senator Marshall’s interview include:

On Chuck Schumer owning this shutdown

“This is the Schumer Shutdown. He controls those votes… We’re working on his budget. It was his responsibility to get this budget done by the end of September last year, and he didn’t do it. They made a big gamble. They were gambling when they controlled the White House, the Senate, and the House. And guess what? They’ve lost all three of them…

“But I’m very willing to stay here. We can stay here and get more of President Trump’s nominees across the finish line…”

On what the Continuing Resolution accomplishes:

“This will fund the government through the end of the year. And I think the good news is we’re not increasing spending any. By using this continuing resolution process, we’re not going to increase any funding above last year for all practical purposes. And my guess is we’ll actually spend $50 billion less.

“And this is what we need to get behind us, so we can go through and work on President Trump’s reconciliation plan, where we give him the funding to control the border, to increase our military presence as well.

“… We need to get this current year behind us. Chuck Schumer should have taken care of this last September. It was his responsibility. He refused to do it. He gambled, and that’s why it’s the Schumer Shutdown.”

On budget reconciliation:

“At the end of the day, what we want to be focused on is the budget reconciliation process to get President Trump what he wants, and also work on the debt ceiling, and then something called rescission, where we’re going to take… waste, fraud, and abuse that Elon Musk and his team are finding, I think he’s found $100 billion so far. The president can submit those to Congress, and we can do a rescission package again at the 50-vote level, rather than 60.

“So, getting this behind us, getting the government funded through September will allow us to get to President Trump’s next priorities.”
